Small Torque With JB - Issue 5
26.05.2010
The car was awesome at Winton. The only test day we have done was at Winton and I am very aware of what the car needs around that track. There is no sense in having done all that racing for 35 years without learning something along the way.
Also, Bill McKenna from Penske shocks Australia has helped us develop some very clever shock absorbers for the mustang. Bill and I worked together lots in the past, both with DJR and later CAT Racing and BJR, we speak the came language.
At Winton , optimizing the damping is really important because of the kerbs and the bumps. Even though this car is 40 years old, keeping its wheels attached to the black stuff is still as important as it is in a V8 supercar. To have been fastest in each session and to win each race and set a new lap record is a great feeling and I want to thank each and every one of you for the help, support and interest you have shown in the OLD CARS FOR OLD BLOKES "phase of my racing career.
I am getting such a shock at the cost of owning a race car and running it after 25 years of driving someone else's, that to have a weekend like we did at Winton is wonderful. The interest shown in the Touring Car Masters Series , cars and drivers is amazing. At Winton the cars were always surrounded by lots of adoring fans, I think the adoring bit was for the cars , not the drivers !
Last but not least, I want to thank Dick Savy from Savy Motorsport who looks after the car and has been instrumental in making the Mustang the equal of anything out there. Dick is one of those rare Aussie race preparers that can fabricate design, do suspension analysis, build engines, diffs, gearboxes and placate fussy anal drivers like me.
Hope to see you all soon. Cheers , JB.
